Access is offering free downloads of the trial version of its NetFront v3.1 Software Development Kit (SDK) for Linux. The Qtopia/Qt/Embedded package is available now, with the GTK package to follow in early January, 2004. The commercial version of the SDK for Linux will ship at the end of December, according to Access.

Access claims that NetFront is the world's most widely deployed and actively used browser for mobile devices, with global deployments in excess of 100 million. The NetFront SDK allows developers to port NetFront to and customize it for a variety of embedded Linux environments and devices.

Both the GTK- and the Qtopia-based trial version include evaluation distributions of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.0 and MontaVista Graphics, as well as Trolltech Qt/Embedded and Qtopia.

The newest version of NetFront, v3.1, features “Smart-Fit Rendering,” which intelligently renders Web pages to fit the narrow screen widths of mobile devices, eliminating horizontal scrolling. Another feature, “Direct Connect,” enables the browser to monitor and control hardware connected to a device.
