Open source app puts the squeeze on network traffic

UMPC bridges MID, netbook formats

UMID is readying a MID-like ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) for the Korean market that runs Linux. The UMID Mbook is equipped with an Intel Atom processor, a 4.8-inch, 1024 x 600 touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, 1.3-megapixel camera, and a HSDPA 3G cellular modem, says the company. (more…)

Motorola falters as competitors prep Android phones

Motorola announced a 28 percent drop in revenues year over year, with handset sales falling sharply as the company waits for its fourth-quarter Android smartphone launch, says eWEEK. A Chinese wireless device manufacturer has announced three tracking devices that use both GPS and GSM cellular triangulation location services. $100 card converts old PCs into Linux thin clients

Igel has released an add-in card that enables old desktop PCs to be turned into Linux thin clients on the cheap. The “Igel TC Card” costs $100 and requires a computer to have an available PCI slot and an IDE interface, the company says. (more…)

WiFi cards to offer Linux drivers

Apple sued for squelching wiki chat

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed suit against Apple to defend the First Amendment rights of a noncommercial online forum. The suit comes in response to pressure from Apple lawyers that forced “BluWiki” to remove discussions of how to make third-party media management software work with the iPhone and iPod. (more…)

Samsung’s Android phone to launch in Germany

Samsung Electronics announced its first Android phone, which will be offered by Telefonica's O2 network in Germany, starting as early as June.
